I’ve been slack at updating this blog but I think I have a pretty good excuse. The family and I recently completed a 20 day east-coast road trip. I could have blogged the trip while I traveled but I was trying to keep computer time to a minimum. First, the vital stats of the trip and then the details.
Stats
- 2,792 miles driven
- 20 days
- 11 cities visited
- 3 nights spent in hotels
- 1 “Exit 0″(yes, zero) passed
Why the Trip?
We’ve been talking for a while about taking a vacation and since I’m currently unemployed, it was pretty easy for me to take three weeks off and do a road trip. As it so happens, we were able to schedule some family events, a board meeting (for me), and a conference (again, for me) while we were traveling.
Fortunately, we did a good bit of planning so our longest stretch of one day driving wasn’t too bad (about 10 hours). Here are the cities we visited:
- Greenville, SC
- Washington, D.C. (we stayed in Onlney, MD)
- Piscataway, NJ
- Millerton, NY
- Norwalk, CT
- Newark NJ (we stayed in West Orange, NJ)
- Philadelphia, PA
- Hershey, PA
- Pittsburgh, PA
- Dayton, OH
- Lexington, KY
Yes, this was a serious east coast road trip. We made sure we got out and saw the sights as well. During the trip, we saw:
- National Zoo
- Smithsonian Air & Space Museum
- Turtleback Zoo
- Liberty Bell
- Independence Hall
- National Constitution Center
- Hershey’s World of Chocolate
- National Air Force Museum
- Kentucky Horse Park
All in all, this was a really fun trip. We got to see a lot of important things and we did a lot of fun things. But we’re all glad to be back and I’m fully recharged and ready to get back to business!

Incredible …. I’ve always wanted to do this. In college we did a trip out west and stopped in a number of places to camp from arizona back through louisiana … how fun.
It was a ton of fun. The only prohibitive thing now is the cost of gasoline. I haven’t totaled up the bill but I expect we burned through about $500 worth of gas over the trip. Still not bad compared to the price of a single plane ticket to any of these locations.
