Ping… Ping… Dopplr

Dopplr LogoI recently got invited to join Dopplr (thanks Nabeel!). Pretty interesting service if you travel a good bit. You can enter the cities you are going to travel to and your friends can see if you’ll both be in a city at the same time. While the idea is great, I keep thinking that this service should actually be a feature of a larger service. If this functionality could be integrated into something like LinkedIn, the value proposition would be obvious. This is partly because the user base already exists (and is connected) and partly because people already use LinkedIn for connecting with others. Why not add a geographic component to it? Plus a feature like this might encourage people to only link to people they know and like as opposed to people who promiscuously link to others for some reason which is not at all obvious to me. By the way, I have a handful of invites to Dopplr. If you know me well (and by that, I mean that you think I’ll care to meet up with you when I’m traveling) then feel free to ask me for an invite (either via comments to this post, an email note, or a twitter).

if you are looking for similar features already integrated into a larger social network try Trips in Facebook.

I’m hurt that I don’t already have an invitation in my inbox.

I’m amused by the ads for Ping and other golf clubs that Google has placed on the left.
