For those of you who follow me on Twitter, this announcement will not come as a surprise. For the last few weeks I’ve been tooling around with PHP and Yahoo Pipes in order to get a new news and information aggregator up and running.

It’s an argument that we’ve all heard before.
You don’t have any experience in this space.
Your team hasn’t worked together before.
You’ve never done this before, how could you succeed?
Some people seem to believe that you can only launch a company in an industry that you’ve been working in with a team for a long time. Add to that the requirement that the team has already launched a few successful startups in the same space and then maybe you’ve got the formula to create a successful startup.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or aren’t a part of the Atlanta startup community), you’ve already read Jeff Haynie’s post on what instigated their move. I heard Jeff’s side of the story previously so this wasn’t a surprise to me. Lance just posted a somewhat line by line response to Jeff as well. As you can imagine, I agree and disagree with a random set of stuff within both posts. So here is my two cents based on my view and experience with these issues.

Okay, so with all that activity last week I thought I’d hold off on announcing the next open coffee so that this didn’t get lost in the hub-bub. On August 12th we’re going to do an Open Coffee at the Georgia Tech bookstore Starbucks. We’re going to run from 2pm until 6pm. I’m going to hang out and catch dinner afterward and then head to the AWSome meetup. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join me (make sure you RSVP for the meetup if you’re going to that as well).
Also new for this event will be the announcement of one of the attendees. Greg Foster, who recently joined Noro-Moseley Partners, will be there and happy to talk to any and all entrepreneurs about raising money from venture capitalists. This is not an opportunity to pitch your deal to him but it is an opportunity to get some feedback from him to help you along your way. Use the opportunity wisely.
And if you are a spreadsheet jockey, you’re welcome too. We can help you understand why taking a purely financial view of companies is a silly way to think about things. :-)
UPDATE: The Upcoming group for Open Coffee Atlanta is here. The Upcoming event for this day is here.

So word is I’m going to be quoted in a story in the Atlanta Business Chronicle tomorrow (I haven’t seen it yet) and I thought I’d talk about why I said some of the things I said. First, if you didn’t know the Atlanta Business Chronicle has again put a reporter on the technology/startup beat after saying that they were going to stop covering this area. It might have to do with the fact that so many of you dropped your subscription. I dropped mine years ago in protest of treatment that I got from a previous reporter. Regardless of the changes, I don’t intend to restart my subscription. Unless of course, I can get one for free. But that’s not the point of this blog post.
