Why I Hate Spreadsheet Jockeys

So word is I’m going to be quoted in a story in the Atlanta Business Chronicle tomorrow (I haven’t seen it yet) and I thought I’d talk about why I said some of the things I said.  First, if you didn’t know the Atlanta Business Chronicle has again put a reporter on the technology/startup beat after saying that they were going to stop covering this area.  It might have to do with the fact that so many of you dropped your subscription.  I dropped mine years ago in protest of treatment that I got from a previous reporter.  Regardless of the changes, I don’t intend to restart my subscription.  Unless of course, I can get one for free.  But that’s not the point of this blog post.

Open Coffee - July 30th

Open CoffeeTime to announce the next Open Coffee event. We’ll be hanging out from 2pm until 5pm on Wednesday July 30th at the Panera Bread at Perimeter (4531 Olde Perimeter Way, Atlanta, GA 30346).  Come and hang out, chat about your new venture, or just come and meet some new folks.

Remember, the goal here is to have entrepreneurs, investors, and related folks out to these events.  If you’re a service provider, this isn’t the right venue for you.  Clearly, I can’t stop you from coming but you’ll be shunned by those who do attend.  So do yourself a favor and spend your time doing something more worthwhile.

Feel free to leave a comment and let me know you’re coming or drop me an @ on Twitter.  That way I’ll know to look out for you.

Startup Riot - Perhaps We Should Put VCs in the Hot Seat

This is just awesome.  The Israeli conference, TWS08, got not only startups onstage to pitch their companies but they got three VCs to pitch slide decks that they had never seen before.  The results are quite funny and perhaps this is something we should add to Startup Riot to add some levity to the day.

Open Coffee Take 2

Open Coffee ClubWe’ve been having some random back and forth on Twitter about re-starting open coffee around town.  Since I started the chatter, I’ll launch into the details of where and when.  We’ll shoot to do this every 2 weeks with the first one on July 16, 2008 from 9:30am until 12pm at the Starbucks on 141 & State Bridge.  Remember that Starbucks now has AT&T WiFi so if you’re a AT&T customer, bring your login information to get online for free.  Otherwise, bring a Starbucks card and get 2 hours free that way.  Woot!

If you don’t know what I look like, look around online and you’ll find pictures.  I’ll be there on my Dell laptop.  So if you’re an entrepreneur, hacker, investor, or anyone interested in the scene come and hang out, work, chat, or take a nap.  I’ll decide the next location for 2 weeks out during/after this open coffee.

Startup Riot - Why I Did It This Way

I’ve gotten a lot of great suggestions from folks who attended Startup Riot so I thought I’d respond to them in a unified manner with an explanation of why I did things the way I did them and what things I’m thinking about changing for the next event. A lot of the decisions I made delivered what I wanted and so even though some people want those changed, I’m probably not going to change them.
