Marshall Memorial Fellowship: Conference in Seattle

I’m gearing up for the annual Marshall Memorial Fellowship Conference this week which is why my mind hasn’t been on blogging (I blogged about the fellowship here). The conference is a wonderful part of the fellowship experience but interestingly, you don’t find out about this benefit until after you are an alumnus. Similar to the fellowship, almost all of the food and all of the lodging associated with attending is paid for by the German Marshall Fund and the local coordinators. The venue changes each year and this year it is being held in Seattle. I’m looking forward to seeing how they pull off their program since I’m a part of the team leading the charge for the 2007 conference in Atlanta which happens to be the 25th anniversary of the fellowship program. I’ll try and do a debrief about the conference with some pictures, notes, and maybe some audio after I get back.

More posts next week.

A Month of Updates in One Post

Wow, so I’ve taken a month off from saying anything. Things have been a bit busy.

The day after my last post, I started working again. I think I mentioned before that I’m consulting at a large technology firm in Atlanta. Things are going well and we’ve got some interesting stuff going on this week. Hopefully you’ll see some announcements in a few months at which time I’ll tell you where I’m at and what I’m doing.

New Blog - MarshallFellows.org

I’ve started up a new blog (as if I wasn’t having enough trouble keeping up with this one) for my fellow Marshall Fellows. The site, www.marshallfellows.org, is going to focus on all things that relate to international affairs, transatlantic relations, cultural differences, and other Marshall Fellow type stuff. The authors on the blog include myself but also other individuals that are past or present Marshall Fellows. Right now everyone is just from the American side but I hope to fix that soon.

So if you’re interested in the pontificating of some Marshall Fellows, wander on over and take a read. By the way, the pictures on the site were all taken by me during my Marshall Fellowship trip in June.

Back From Europe

So I am finally back from Europe. Actually I have been for a few days. As I wrapped up the fellowship I got to do some neat things.

In Paris, we had a tour of Matignon, the French Prime Minister’s residence and office. This isn’t something that a regular tourist can do. We got lucky because a MMF alumnus works there. I also had a picnic with some other fellows in front of the Eiffel Tower while watching the Olympic torch relay and a France vs. Greece Eurocup 2004 game (Greece won 1-0). Finally, we did play some foosball in Paris. The hotel guy directed us to the bar “The Long Hop”. Pretty nice place with a weird underground cavern place. They were playing good music but the foos table sucked. When we got to the table, it had liquid spilt on it and cigarette ash on the field. Go figure.

My ankle is healing but it isn’t 100% yet. The doctor has prescribed some physical therapy so I think I’ll start that next week.

Foosing In Warsaw

The last few days have been pretty interesting. We’ve hit some sights like the Polish Parliament and I had a sit down with an analyst from the Polish Ministry of Security (or perhaps it was Defense). We had a good discussion about events in the Middle East.

On Monday evening, a bunch of fellows and I went on a quest to find a foosball table in Warsaw. We hit one pub and it was a bust. But they pointed us to another one that did have one. In fact, we ended up playing foosball in an Irish pub in a Polish city. Go figure. Unfortunately, like all bar foosball tables, this one was poorly maintained, wasn’t level, and was a table with goalie ramps. Not an ideal table by any means. Regardless, whoever played with me either always won or at least tied. There are some benefits of having a foosball table at work. :-) We might have to find one in Paris - but I’m not holding my breath.
