Upcoming Talk: Why Twitter Matters

Tomorrow I’m going to be at the Atlanta Web Entrepreneurs meetup to be on a panel talking about Twitter.  A lot of you who read this blog are already on Twitter but there are a good portion of you who aren’t.  For those of you who aren’t, I hope you’re okay with not being a part of the conversation because that’s exactly what you’re missing.

My (Kinda) New Desktop Computer

I’ve been talking about the hotness around my desktop computer for a while but I haven’t gotten around to blogging about it like I said I would.  So here goes.

A few months back, I decided to get myself a new desktop computer.  But instead of just getting online and configuring one, I thought I’d build one from individual parts and get the kids to help me put it together.  I figured it would be fun for them and me to have a technology project to tackle.

Feedly For the Cookie Aware

I recently got turned on to Feedly but ran into a hitch right away.  I keep cookies turned off in Firefox for security and privacy reasons.  I selectively turn them on based on the site I’m going to.  Unfortunately, Feedly checks the browser settings for this and refuses to work if you’ve disabled third party cookies.  There has been some discussion on Feedly’s GetSatisfaction site about this issue but there is no fix.  Since I’m impatient, I decided to hack their Firefox addon so it’ll work.  So here you go - if you’re in the same situation as me, you can use this link to install a cookie check free Feedly. You may have to download the addon and then open it in Firefox to get it to work.

Note, to get this to work you’ll need to whitelist cookies from feeddo.com (as mentioned in the GetSatisfaction site).  I also added feedly.com just to make sure it’ll work as well.  Seems fine for me.

Also note, if you use this I’m sure you won’t be supported by Feedly.  And since I’m not in the business of supporting people, you won’t be supported by me either.  Caveat emptor!

Startup Riot - The Good And The Bad

So I’ve been waiting a bit to write about the aftermath of Startup Riot. I’m glad I did - a lot has happened in the last few days that I want to talk about. First, you probably want to know if the event is a success. Well, since I organized Startup Riot, I’d probably say “yes”. So instead, why don’t you read what Dan Greenfield, Stephen Fleming, Lance Weatherby, Paul Stamatiou, Paul Freet, Ashish Mistry, Scott Burkett, LenderFlex (presumably David Jones posted this), Mathew Sweezey, and Buddy Ray and Anand Amin had to say. It may look like I only linked to positive posts but I can’t find any negative ones. At least, not yet.

Funny Video on Computers

I know I’ve been hinting at a post about my new computing rig. I just got a new toy this last week that I’m going to use for my post. So it’s coming - probably next week. I’ve also been told that I should quit building machines and just buy an Apple. Yeah, no. The build was a bunch of fun because I was able to do it with my kids (my son now can identify computer parts unprompted and asked me what I was doing with a hard drive I just got - he’s 5 BTW).

In the meantime, I just saw this Wall Street Journal article which talks about problems that this journalist had when he switched to a Mac. You Apple fanatics, take heart - the most important part of the video comes in the last 10 seconds.
