Feedly For the Cookie Aware

I recently got turned on to Feedly but ran into a hitch right away.  I keep cookies turned off in Firefox for security and privacy reasons.  I selectively turn them on based on the site I’m going to.  Unfortunately, Feedly checks the browser settings for this and refuses to work if you’ve disabled third party cookies.  There has been some discussion on Feedly’s GetSatisfaction site about this issue but there is no fix.  Since I’m impatient, I decided to hack their Firefox addon so it’ll work.  So here you go - if you’re in the same situation as me, you can use this link to install a cookie check free Feedly. You may have to download the addon and then open it in Firefox to get it to work.

Note, to get this to work you’ll need to whitelist cookies from feeddo.com (as mentioned in the GetSatisfaction site).  I also added feedly.com just to make sure it’ll work as well.  Seems fine for me.

Also note, if you use this I’m sure you won’t be supported by Feedly.  And since I’m not in the business of supporting people, you won’t be supported by me either.  Caveat emptor!

  1. Question: Did you try this on firefox 2 or firefox 3? I can see how it could work for firefox 2 but not in firefox 3.

  2. I’m on Firefox 3 so I didn’t try it on Firefox 2. Definitely works on FF3.

  3. This stopped working for me today, it seems to automatically update feedly to a newer version instantly when the browser is opened.

Anyone know if it’s possible to prevent this, or if there is a new version of modded version coming soon?

  4. Apparently there was an update to the Feedly extension. I’ve updated the link above to the latest version. I haven’t fully looked into it but I’m assuming the update wasn’t done just to break my fix. I’m hoping Edwin and company aren’t that insidious. But then I’m not really doing something that is fully sanctioned.

I also discovered some “interesting” things in the extension. It’s a wonder what you can find when you go wading into code.

  5. Gah. Still not working. I’ll take a look soon and try to fix this.
