Smoking Ban in Hawai’i

Hawai'iI saw this little snippet which is a welcome sign for Hawai’i:

Hawaii just passed one of the toughest non-smoking laws in the United States. This past November, the Smoke-Free Hawaii Law went into effect—banning smoking in restaurants, bars and places of business and in doorways.

As you might recall, we were in Hawai’i just last year for some much needed vacation. The curious thing is that the Japanese make the bulk of the tourist to Hawai’i because of the relative proximity to Japan. As a people, the Japanese are prolific smokers:

The smoking rate among adult men is almost 50%, while for women it is below 15%.

This has happened because of this very funny line from this page (emphasis mine):

The anti-smoking hysteria has not arrived in Japan yet, and smoking is still relatively popular.

I’d rather be hysterical and alive than not-hysterical and dead.
