A little over 8 years ago, I came up with a zany idea (which was later patented) to make the Internet a better place by creating a technology which would automatically identify where people were based solely on their IP address. The idea came to me when I hit the FedEx and Ikea website one evening. Then (and now), both sites asked for my country location before showing me any content. I thought that was a horrible user experience especially for dialup Internet users (like me at that time). So I devised what I thought was a simple solution to the problem. It turned out that implementing the “simple” solution was not simple at all.

I finally saw official mention of this so I thought I’d do a quick post. Internet Explorer 7 includes functionality which helps prevent phishing attacks. This technology was provided from third party vendors to Microsoft and includes Digital Resolve’s service (Digital Resolve is a Digital Envoy business unit). Congrats to the Digital Envoy team for getting their technology incorporated in a widely used and directly consumer facing application! Here is the official press release from Microsoft and the Microsoft blog mention.

Diversifying Revenue Generation

One classic startup problem is relying on a single small segment of the market to generate 100% of your revenue. This is fine when your target market is doing well. But your ability to function is at the mercy of the performance of your customers.
Sometimes a diversification may not seem like “real” revenue diversification. Take Digital Envoy for example (you knew that was coming, didn’t you?). For a long time, IP intelligence technology may have appeared to be the company’s only revenue stream. The technology (NetAcuity) was the main source of revenue but the revenue was driven by customers in a number of different markets – advertising, content control, fraud control, etc. At Digital Envoy, we’ve seen that if one market was doing poorly, another was keeping us so busy that we could barely keep up. Digital Envoy has continued down this path by taking advantage of a large opportunity to diversify revenue by creating a business unit focused solely on helping financial transaction companies manage their businesses (see Digital Resolve).
New Board Gig: Coyote Point Systems

I’ve been slow at talking about this, but I recently joined the board of another private company - Coyote Point Systems. Coyote Point has a great history (which you can read here) but the most impressive thing about the company is that they were totally bootstrapped from the beginning. There are few stories out there about bootstrapped hardware companies nowadays (and fewer still that have thrived) and Coyote Point is one of them.
Some of you may vaguely recall the Coyote Point name and wonder why. Well, my company, Digital Envoy, and Coyote Point built an award winning joint product together - Emissary. This is when I got to know Bill Kish (CEO and CTO of Coyote Point) and the rest of the crew over at CPS.
So I’m happy to join the Coyote Point board and I think there are a lot of great things to come for the company, Bill, the employees, and all of the happy CPS clients.
