Gray Hair Isn’t An Accomplishment

It’s an argument that we’ve all heard before.

You don’t have any experience in this space.

Your team hasn’t worked together before.

You’ve never done this before, how could you succeed?

Some people seem to believe that you can only launch a company in an industry that you’ve been working in with a team for a long time.  Add to that the requirement that the team has already launched a few successful startups in the same space and then maybe you’ve got the formula to create a successful startup.

Observations^3

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or aren’t a part of the Atlanta startup community), you’ve already read Jeff Haynie’s post on what instigated their move.  I heard Jeff’s side of the story previously so this wasn’t a surprise to me.  Lance just posted a somewhat line by line response to Jeff as well.  As you can imagine, I agree and disagree with a random set of stuff within both posts.  So here is my two cents based on my view and experience with these issues.

Startup Weekend Atlanta

Startup Weekend AtlantaI’ve had a lot of random events going on lately. Last week I was in New York for a conference and this upcoming weekend is Startup Weekend Atlanta. I’m looking forward to the event especially since I don’t know a number of people currently slated to attend. I always find these types of events more interesting when I get to meet folks I didn’t know before.  If you’re and are a reader of my blog, feel free to introduce yourself.  I always enjoy meeting folks who take the time to read my random thoughts.  And if you aren’t already signed up to go, it’ll be hard to get a spot at this point.  The attendee list and waitlist are pretty full but give it a try.  You never know until you try.  I’ll see the rest of you on Friday!

3,026 Days Later

Digital Envoy CakeA little over 8 years ago, I came up with a zany idea (which was later patented) to make the Internet a better place by creating a technology which would automatically identify where people were based solely on their IP address. The idea came to me when I hit the FedEx and Ikea website one evening. Then (and now), both sites asked for my country location before showing me any content. I thought that was a horrible user experience especially for dialup Internet users (like me at that time). So I devised what I thought was a simple solution to the problem. It turned out that implementing the “simple” solution was not simple at all.

Ping… Ping… Dopplr

Dopplr LogoI recently got invited to join Dopplr (thanks Nabeel!). Pretty interesting service if you travel a good bit. You can enter the cities you are going to travel to and your friends can see if you’ll both be in a city at the same time. While the idea is great, I keep thinking that this service should actually be a feature of a larger service. If this functionality could be integrated into something like LinkedIn, the value proposition would be obvious. This is partly because the user base already exists (and is connected) and partly because people already use LinkedIn for connecting with others. Why not add a geographic component to it? Plus a feature like this might encourage people to only link to people they know and like as opposed to people who promiscuously link to others for some reason which is not at all obvious to me. By the way, I have a handful of invites to Dopplr. If you know me well (and by that, I mean that you think I’ll care to meet up with you when I’m traveling) then feel free to ask me for an invite (either via comments to this post, an email note, or a twitter).
