Technology Will Set You Free, Maybe

Some recent events (personal and professional) have made me consider the place technology has in life.

For many people, technology becomes a type of electronic ball and chain which is forever latched to their legs. You have undoubtedly seen these folks before in everyday life. They’re the ones that are trying to do email on their blackberry email devices while driving and yet they aren’t at a complete stop. They’re also the ones that will answer the phone while using the bathroom (public or private). These are the folks that, in my opinion, have taken accessibility and access to technology to an undesirable extreme. I still appreciate the personal phone call or face-to-face meeting with a friend or acquaintance.

On the other hand, technology has the ability for you to be able to accomplish things that were impossible before. Technology allows for constant security and vigilance over an area through automation. Or easily controlling when, how, and where entertainment media is enjoyed. Or the ability to easily contact individuals for meetings during business trips so that your time is spent most efficiently.

Clearly there is a definite benefit in leveraging and using new technologies. I just wonder if the nature of some people allow for the benefits of technology to take too much of a strangle hold on their lives. And more importantly, what that means for the rest of us who don’t care to be ensnared in such a net of technology. Will the rest of us have to “keep up” with these people?
